although the photo is Julia Roberts...again.

Developers were so resourceful in the sixties--when they wanted to build single family houses on a 50 acre tract formerly used as an oil tank farm, they just slapped a cute name like Carousel on it and watched the buyers roll in. Flash forward, and about 285 homeowners in the Carson neighborhood of Carousel are in the middle of a lawsuit against Shell Oil, developer Barclay Hollander Corporation (now owned by Dole Foods), and others, following the discovery of scary amounts of methane and the carcinogen benzene in the land. Activist Erin Brockovich brought in her go-to law firm Girardi and Keese to represent the homeowners.

Erin On Gardasil Watch
Submitted by village on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 15:23.There's another danger on the horizon. It's not entirely unique. Vaccines in the past have caused an uproar because their administration has been connected with varying problems such as autism. So you see, it's not that unusual for a vaccine to be known as a "loaded gun." What is this latest "loaded gun?" It's Gardasil.
What is a "loaded gun" anyway? The expression implies something that is a weapon, armed, ready to go off. But what makes the expression is the inference that a loaded gun is a weapon that could go off at any time, not necessarily aimed at the place where it should be aimed, but without warning, spontaneously, like a hidden land mine waiting to detonate unexpectedly.

Submitted by village on Wed, 05/05/2010 - 10:47.Carson Carousel, built in the 1970's on land used for the disposal of oil, has had an aftermath of resident sicknesses such as asthma, leukemia and even lifelong illnesses like cancer. Chemicals that cause deformations and retardations among pregnant women are bringing Shell Oil to the brink of paying big. But the residents aren't glory hounds. They're not chasing dreams of riches.
