All charitable corporations must be registered with the Secretary of State where they are located. The registration record of non-profit organizations is a matter of public record. If you suspect a charity is not legitimate, check online or by phone.

You can also check a charity's validity thru Guidestar.

You can also check the IRS who publishes Publication 78, a cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. An online version is offered to help you conduct a more efficient search of these organizations.
